Toolbox Talk:

AED Maintenance and Inspection

June 27, 2025

An AED is only life-saving if it works when needed. That means it must be inspected regularly and kept in good working condition.

Why It Matters:

A dead battery or missing electrode pads can turn a rescue tool into a useless box. OSHA doesn’t mandate AEDs on all jobsites, but if one is provided, it must be maintained properly under general duty standards.

Key Points:

  • Inspect AEDs weekly or before each shift if they are portable and moved around frequently.
  • Check the status light: Most AEDs have an indicator showing whether they are operational.
  • Verify pads and batteries: Make sure they’re present, sealed, and not expired.
  • Document inspections: Use a simple logbook or tag system to track checks and servicing.

✅ A non-functional AED is worse than none at all — it gives false hope.

Ask the Crew:

  • Who’s assigned to inspect our AED?
  • When was it last checked?
  • Are replacement pads and batteries available if needed?
