Toolbox Talk:

Always Use a Spotter in Blind Zones

June 25, 2025

When operating heavy equipment, even small blind spots can lead to major accidents. A dedicated spotter helps guide operators and prevent collisions with workers, obstacles, or other vehicles.

Why It Matters:

Most struck-by incidents involving heavy equipment happen because the operator couldn’t see someone. Spotters act as the operator’s eyes on the ground, especially in tight or congested areas.

Key Points:

  • Assign a trained spotter whenever vision is limited.
  • Use clearly agreed-upon hand signals or two-way radios.
  • Stop equipment movement immediately if the spotter is out of view.
  • Spotters must wear high-visibility gear at all times.
  • Never assume the operator sees you — confirm visual or verbal contact.

✅ No line of sight = No movement.

Ask the Crew:

  • Who is our designated spotter today?
  • Are we following proper spotter communication protocols?
