It’s not just the trench walls — a Competent Person must inspect the whole operation.
Why It Matters:
A trench can appear stable but still pose serious risks. Water accumulation, shifting soil, or even nearby equipment can compromise safety. If you only check one part, you’re leaving the door open for something else to go wrong.
Key Points:
- Inspect soil type and moisture levels — they can change throughout the day.
- Look for signs of water seepage or pooling.
- Verify protective systems are properly installed and not shifting.
- Confirm spoil piles are at least 2 feet from the edge.
- Check ladders or access routes — make sure they’re within 25 feet of all workers.
- Ensure nearby equipment isn’t placing added pressure on trench walls.
✅ Look at the whole picture — not just the hole.
Ask the Crew:
- Are we checking everything — or just the trench?
- Are access and spoil piles safe too?
- Has anything changed since the last inspection?
