Toolbox Talk:

Build Stairways to Withstand the Load

June 25, 2025

Temporary or permanent stairways must be built to support the expected foot traffic and weight loads. Cutting corners during installation can lead to structural failures and serious falls.

Why It Matters:

Workers often carry tools, materials, or heavy loads up and down stairs. If the stairs aren’t properly built and braced, a collapse can happen with little warning — especially during busy periods.

Key Points:

  • Stairways must support at least five times the intended load or a minimum of 1,000 pounds, whichever is greater.
  • Treads must be level, evenly spaced, and slip-resistant.
  • Stairways with 4 or more risers require a handrail on at least one side.
  • If the stairway is part of temporary construction, ensure solid framing and regular inspection.
  • Secure the base and top landings — wobbly connections are a red flag.

✅ Sturdy stairs protect every worker who climbs them.

Ask the Crew:

  • Were our stairs built to handle the current load?
  • Do we need to recheck any fasteners or supports?
