Toolbox Talk:

Call Before You Dig

June 22, 2025

Before any excavation, always call 811 or the local utility marking service. You must know what’s buried before breaking ground.

Why It Matters:

Striking a gas, electric, or water line can cause explosions, electrocution, floods, or massive delays.

Key Points:

  • Call at least 48 hours before digging.
  • Wait for all utilities to be marked.
  • Verify color codes:
    • Red = electric
    • Yellow = gas
    • Blue = water
    • Orange = communications
    • Green = sewer
    • Purple = reclaimed water
  • Keep marks visible — repaint if disturbed.

✅ One call can prevent a disaster.

Ask the Crew:

  • Did we call 811 for this job?
  • Are all markings visible and accurate?
  • Do we know what each color means?
