Ladder Inspection & Setup

Toolbox Talk:

Check the Angle — 4 to 1 Rule

June 25, 2025

A properly angled ladder is easier and safer to climb. Too steep or too shallow, and you’re asking for trouble.

Why It Matters:

If the angle is too steep, the ladder can tip backward. Too shallow, and it can slide out from under you. The right angle provides balance, stability, and confidence while working at heights.

Key Points:

  • Use the 4:1 ratio: For every 4 feet of ladder height, place the base 1 foot out from the wall or structure.
  • For example, a 16-foot ladder should be 4 feet away at the base.
  • Stand with your toes at the ladder’s feet and extend your arms — your palms should just touch a rung at shoulder height. That’s a good quick check.
  • Never guess the angle — always take a moment to verify.
  • An incorrect angle increases fall risk and can void ladder safety ratings.

✅ Right angle = right protection.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are all our ladders angled using the 4:1 rule?
  • Should we pause to double-check before the next climb?
