Toolbox Talk:

Decontamination Procedures After Asbestos Exposure

June 27, 2025

Any time you’ve worked around asbestos, you must follow strict steps to prevent spreading contamination.

Why It Matters:

Asbestos fibers are invisible and can stick to your clothes, skin, and tools. If carried off-site, they can put others at risk — including your family.

Key Points:

  • Decontamination areas should be set up outside the regulated work zone.
  • Use a 3-stage decon unit if required: clean room → shower → equipment room.
  • Always remove disposable PPE inside the decon area — never outside.
  • Shower thoroughly using running water to wash off fibers from skin and hair.
  • Clean tools and reusable gear with HEPA-filter vacuums or wet wiping methods.
  • Never dry-sweep or use compressed air to clean gear — this spreads fibers.

✅ Proper decon protects you, your team, and everyone else from dangerous asbestos exposure.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we have a clear decontamination process for asbestos-related work?
  • Are we using wet methods and HEPA vacuums to clean tools and equipment?
