Safe Scaffold Use and Access

Toolbox Talk:

Don’t Climb Cross Braces or Frame Members

June 25, 2025

Scaffold frames are not ladders. Climbing them puts workers at serious risk of falls and structural collapse.

Why It Matters:

Cross braces and horizontal scaffold members are not designed for climbing. They’re there to support the structure — not your body weight. Using them for access can bend, break, or destabilize the scaffold, putting everyone at risk.

Key Points:

  • Only use designated ladders or stair towers to access scaffold platforms.
  • Never climb cross braces, diagonal supports, or vertical scaffold frames.
  • If no safe access is available, stop work and notify a supervisor.
  • Check for fall protection requirements when climbing to higher levels.

✅ Safe access keeps the scaffold — and you — upright.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we using proper access points to reach scaffold platforms?
  • Have we ever seen or stopped someone climbing the frame?
