Toolbox Talk:

Don’t Work Alone in Trenches

June 22, 2025

If something goes wrong, you need a spotter or backup to respond immediately.

Why It Matters:

Many trench fatalities occur when workers are alone, unobserved, and unable to call for help. Seconds count in a collapse — and having another person nearby can make the difference between life and death.

Key Points:

  • Never work in a trench without someone nearby monitoring.
  • Assign a trench watch or dedicated spotter when possible.
  • Radios or phones must be tested and functional before work starts.
  • Lone work policies should be enforced as part of site safety rules.
  • Spotters should know how to call for help and guide rescue responders.

No one works alone in the hole.

Ask the Crew:

  • Is anyone working alone in or near a trench today?
  • Do we have working radios and a spotter system in place?
