Equipment Blind Spots & Exclusion Zones

Toolbox Talk:

Establishing and Enforcing Exclusion Zones

June 26, 2025

Exclusion zones are controlled areas around equipment that keep unauthorized personnel out of harm’s way. They’re essential anytime heavy machinery is operating.

Why It Matters:

Without exclusion zones, workers may unknowingly walk into swing areas, backing paths, or lift zones — leading to serious injuries or fatalities. Defined zones give operators room to work safely and keep others protected.

Key Points:

  • Establish exclusion zones before operating cranes, excavators, forklifts, or other heavy equipment.
  • Use cones, barriers, signage, or flagging tape to clearly mark the zone.
  • Only trained personnel with a job-related reason should enter.
  • Communicate the zone rules to all crews during pre-task meetings.
  • Assign a spotter or supervisor to monitor and enforce compliance.

✅ A marked zone is a safe zone. If you don’t need to be there — stay clear.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are today’s exclusion zones clearly marked and communicated?
  • Who’s responsible for keeping unauthorized people out of the zone?
