Soil classification isn’t guesswork — field tests give you the facts needed to choose proper protection.
Why It Matters:
Visual inspection alone can be misleading. Using simple field tests ensures the Competent Person selects the right protective system — and avoids collapse.
Key Points:
- Thumb Penetration Test:
- Push your thumb into a fresh soil sample.
- Hard to penetrate = likely Type A; easy = likely Type C.
- Plasticity Test:
- Roll soil into a thin thread (⅛ inch diameter).
- If it breaks easily, it’s likely sandy (Type C). Clay will remain flexible.
- Ribbon Test:
- Squeeze soil between thumb and forefinger.
- Longer ribbons mean higher cohesion (Type A/B); crumbly means less stability.
- Soil should be tested at least daily and whenever conditions change.
✅ Field tests aren’t optional — they’re your first defense.
Ask the Crew:
- Have we tested the soil today or just guessed?
- Who is responsible for daily classification?
- Are we adjusting protection when soil changes?
