Basic First Aid for Jobsite Injuries

Toolbox Talk:

First Aid for Cuts, Scrapes, and Puncture Wounds

June 27, 2025

Construction jobs involve sharp tools, jagged materials, and unexpected hazards. Even minor cuts or punctures can become serious if not treated promptly and correctly.

Why It Matters:

Open wounds can easily become infected, especially on a dirty jobsite. Quick first aid helps stop bleeding, prevent infection, and keep workers safe from complications like tetanus or sepsis.

Key Points:

  • Stop the bleeding by applying firm, direct pressure with a clean cloth or bandage.
  • Clean the wound thoroughly using clean water and antiseptic.
  • Cover the injury with a sterile bandage or dressing.
  • Avoid using dirty gloves or rags — they can introduce bacteria.
  • Report all injuries, even small ones. Infection can set in quickly.

✅ A clean wound today avoids a hospital visit tomorrow.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we have fully stocked first aid kits nearby?
  • Do you know how to treat a bleeding injury correctly?
  • Are you up to date on your tetanus shots?
