Toolbox Talk:

Forklift Stability and Load Handling Basics

June 26, 2025

Forklifts aren’t like regular vehicles — they balance loads on a three-point stability triangle. If that balance tips, so does the machine.

Why It Matters:

Improperly handling or positioning a load is one of the leading causes of forklift tip-overs. These accidents are not only dangerous for the operator but also for workers nearby. Understanding how weight, movement, and lift height affect stability is key to preventing disaster.

Key Points:

  • Know your forklift’s rated load capacity — and never exceed it.
  • Keep the heaviest part of the load closest to the mast.
  • Lift and lower loads only when the forklift is stopped and on level ground.
  • Never turn with a raised load.
  • Be cautious on ramps — travel with the forks pointed uphill when going up or down.

✅ Stability starts with the operator’s decisions.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we all know the load limits of our forklifts?
  • Are operators comfortable judging if a load is stable and safe to move?
