Toolbox Talk:

Handling Chemicals Safely — From Storage to Use

June 27, 2025

Chemicals are part of everyday tasks on a jobsite, but unsafe handling can lead to burns, respiratory issues, fires, or worse. Whether you’re dealing with solvents, adhesives, or cleaning agents, following proper procedures keeps you and your crew safe.

Why It Matters:

Improper handling of chemicals is a leading cause of workplace injuries and illnesses. Many jobsite chemicals are corrosive, flammable, or toxic — and exposure can happen through skin contact, inhalation, or accidental ingestion.

Key Points:

  • Read the label and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before using any chemical. Know the hazards, PPE requirements, and first aid instructions.
  • Wear the proper PPE, including gloves, goggles, and respiratory protection when required.
  • Never mix chemicals, especially cleaning products — they can create deadly gases.
  • Use chemicals in well-ventilated areas. Ventilation is key to preventing fume buildup.
  • Always label secondary containers. Never leave an unlabeled bottle or bucket — it’s a violation and a hazard.
  • Store chemicals properly, upright and away from heat sources. Segregate incompatibles (e.g., acids vs. bases).
  • Clean up spills immediately using approved absorbents and follow proper disposal protocols.
  • Wash your hands after handling chemicals, even if gloves were worn.

✅ A few extra minutes of preparation with chemicals can prevent a lifetime of injury.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do you know where the SDS is located for the products you’re using?
  • Are all your containers clearly labeled and sealed?
  • What should you do if a chemical splashes on your skin or eyes?
