An SDS isn’t just a formality — it’s your first line of defense when working with hazardous substances.

Why It Matters:

Understanding the structure of a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) helps workers quickly locate critical information during an incident. OSHA requires SDSs to follow a standardized 16-section format, making them easier to navigate. Whether you’re responding to a spill, applying first aid, or choosing PPE, knowing how to read an SDS can make all the difference.

Key Points:

• Section 1–3: Identifies the substance, hazards, and ingredients.
• Section 4–6: Covers first aid, firefighting measures, and accidental release procedures.
• Section 7–11: Provides handling/storage, PPE needs, and exposure controls.
• Section 12–15: Covers ecological data, disposal, and regulatory info.
• Section 16: Lists other helpful details and revision history.
• Always check Section 2 for the hazard classifications and pictograms, and Section 8 for required PPE.
