Toolbox Talk:

How to Respond If You Encounter Suspected Asbestos

June 27, 2025

If you find something on site that you suspect may contain asbestos, don’t guess—stop and follow proper protocol. Acting quickly and correctly can protect everyone on the job.

Why It Matters:

Disturbing asbestos without controls can release microscopic fibers that stay airborne for hours. Even brief exposure can lead to serious diseases later in life. That’s why immediate response is critical.

Key Points:

  • Stop work immediately if you suspect asbestos.
  • Do not touch, cut, break, or move the material.
  • Secure the area to prevent others from entering.
  • Notify your supervisor or safety manager right away.
  • Only trained professionals should inspect or sample the material.
  • If asbestos is confirmed, a licensed abatement contractor must handle removal or encapsulation.

✅ When in doubt, treat it as a hazard. Protect yourself and your crew.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we know the procedure for reporting suspected asbestos?
  • Who do we contact if we come across questionable materials?
