Pre-Operational Equipment Inspections

Toolbox Talk:

Inspect Before You Operate — Every Time

June 25, 2025

Before any piece of heavy equipment is started, it must be thoroughly inspected. Skipping your pre-op check can lead to breakdowns, injuries, or worse.

Why It Matters:

Pre-operational inspections help identify mechanical failures, leaks, or safety hazards before they become serious problems. It’s your first line of defense for both equipment life and crew safety.

Key Points:

  • Always walk around the equipment before starting — check for visible leaks, tire damage, missing guards, or debris.
  • Use a checklist specific to the machine (forklift, loader, excavator, etc.).
  • Test all lights, horns, alarms, brakes, and steering controls.
  • Check fluid levels: oil, coolant, hydraulic, DEF (if applicable).
  • Document and report any issues immediately — do not operate until cleared.

✅ If it’s not inspected, it’s not ready.

Ask the Crew:

  • Did we complete and document today’s pre-op inspection?
  • Is everyone familiar with the inspection checklist for their assigned equipment?
