Safe Scaffold Use and Access

Toolbox Talk:

Keep Access Points Clear and Safe

June 25, 2025

Blocked or cluttered scaffold access points slow down movement and increase fall risks.

Why It Matters:

In an emergency, workers need to get off the scaffold quickly and safely. If ladders, stair towers, or walkways are blocked, trips, falls, and delays in rescue can occur. Routine clutter also increases everyday hazards.

Key Points:

  • Never block scaffold ladders or stairways with tools, materials, or debris.
  • Maintain at least 18 inches of clear space around access points.
  • Ensure platforms leading to access points are fully planked and secure.
  • Use toe boards and guardrails to prevent items from falling near exits.

✅ Clear exits help prevent chaos when seconds count.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are any scaffold access areas blocked today?
  • Who’s responsible for keeping walkways and ladders clear?
