Safe Scaffold Use and Access

Toolbox Talk:

Keep Access Routes Clear at All Times

June 25, 2025

Scaffold access points must be kept free of tools, debris, and materials — no exceptions.

Why It Matters:

Blocked or cluttered access routes create serious fall hazards. In an emergency, you may need to descend quickly. Every second counts, and a clear path can mean the difference between a safe exit and a serious injury.

Key Points:

  • Never store materials on ladders, stair towers, or platforms near entry/exit points.
  • Clear mud, snow, ice, or other slipping hazards from access routes.
  • Inspect access routes before each shift.
  • Tag scaffold access areas that are unsafe until corrected.

✅ A clear way up means a clear way down — especially in emergencies.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are any scaffold access points blocked today?
  • Who is responsible for keeping them clear?
