Spoil Pile Placement

Toolbox Talk:

Keep Spoil Piles 2 Feet Away

June 22, 2025

Always keep excavated material — spoil piles — at least 2 feet from the edge of the trench.

Why It Matters:

Heavy piles too close to the edge add pressure and increase the risk of collapse.

Key Points:

  • OSHA requires a 2-foot setback minimum.
  • Keep material on the uphill side when possible.
  • Use barriers to prevent material from sliding back in.

✅ Distance equals safety.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are our spoil piles too close?
  • Do we need to move anything back?
