Toolbox Talk:

Keep Stairways Clear and Safe

June 25, 2025

Stairways are often overlooked during site setup, but they’re one of the most frequently used access routes on any jobsite. Poorly maintained or blocked stairways can lead to trips, falls, or serious injuries.

Why It Matters:

Slips and trips on stairways are one of the top causes of injuries in construction. Ensuring that stairways remain clear and secure reduces the risk of workers falling while carrying tools or materials.

Key Points:

  • Stairways must be free of debris, tools, and stored materials at all times.
  • Ensure handrails are secure and extend the full length of the stairway.
  • Treads should be even, non-slip, and in good condition.
  • Temporary stairways must meet OSHA’s 1926.1052 standards — including width, load capacity, and landing space.
  • Stairways must be illuminated or marked with visible lighting for safe navigation during low-light hours.

✅ A clear stairway is a safe stairway.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are our stairways clear of obstructions today?
  • Do we need to reinforce or inspect any handrails?
