Utility markings follow a national color code system. Every worker should recognize and understand what each color means.

Why It Matters:

Misreading a color marking could mean cutting into a live electric line, hitting a gas main, or flooding the site. Recognizing the color code helps prevent accidents before they happen.

Key Points:

• Red = Electric power lines, cables, conduit
• Yellow = Gas, oil, steam, petroleum
• Blue = Potable water
• Orange = Communications, alarm or signal lines
• Green = Sewer and drain lines
• Purple = Reclaimed water, irrigation, slurry
• Pink = Temporary survey markings
• White = Proposed excavation

✅ Color knowledge = hazard awareness. Don’t guess — know what you’re digging near.

Ask the Crew:

• Can everyone identify the color codes on site?
• Are any markings unclear or missing?
• Should we post a color-code chart near the work zone?
