Toolbox Talk:

Know Where to Find Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

June 27, 2025

SDSs are critical for understanding the risks and safe handling of hazardous substances on site.

Why It Matters:

Every chemical product on a jobsite must have a corresponding Safety Data Sheet (SDS) available to workers. In an emergency or spill, knowing how to quickly access and interpret the SDS can prevent injuries, protect health, and ensure proper cleanup. OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) requires employers to maintain SDSs for all hazardous chemicals and make them readily accessible.

Key Points:

  • SDSs provide important info like chemical ingredients, hazards, PPE requirements, and first aid instructions.
  • SDSs must be available at all times, whether in print or digital format.
  • Ensure all workers know where SDSs are stored and how to access them in an emergency.
  • Supervisors must keep SDSs updated and include them in orientation and training.

✅ Quick access to SDSs = faster, safer responses to chemical exposure.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do you know where the SDSs are located on this site?
  • Have you been shown how to read one in an emergency?
