Toolbox Talk:

Know Your Equipment’s Blind Spots

June 26, 2025

Heavy equipment often has massive blind spots that can hide entire workers, vehicles, or structures. Operators and ground crews must understand these zones to prevent tragic accidents.

Why It Matters:

Many struck-by fatalities happen because someone entered an operator’s blind spot. Even with mirrors and cameras, visibility is limited. Awareness and planning are your best defenses.

Key Points:

  • Every piece of equipment has different blind spots — review the operator’s manual and diagrams.
  • The rear and sides of dump trucks, loaders, and excavators are common danger zones.
  • Use spotters to guide movement and monitor blind zones, especially when reversing or swinging booms.
  • Never assume an operator can see you — make eye contact or stay in clear sight.
  • Wear high-visibility gear at all times around mobile equipment.

✅ Visibility saves lives. Know where you can’t be seen — and stay out.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we know the blind spots of the equipment on today’s site?
  • Are we using spotters effectively to manage those areas?
