Toolbox Talk:

Know Your Equipment’s Limits and Features

June 25, 2025

Every piece of heavy equipment operates differently — even similar models can have unique controls, limits, and blind spots.

Why It Matters:

Assuming you know how a machine works without a walkthrough is dangerous. Features like swing radius, backup alarms, load limits, and safety lockouts vary by make and model. Not knowing them can lead to rollovers, crushing hazards, or serious damage.

Key Points:

  • Always read the operator’s manual before using unfamiliar equipment.
  • Walk around the machine to identify swing zones, pinch points, and hydraulic components.
  • Know the equipment’s rated load limits and operational restrictions.
  • Understand safety systems — such as travel lockouts, seat sensors, or automatic shutoffs.
  • Communicate with your team before first-time use or when swapping machines.

✅ Familiarity prevents fatal mistakes.

Ask the Crew:

  • Has anyone been assigned a machine they’ve never used before?
  • Do we allow time for operators to review controls and safety features before starting work?
