Lead Exposure Prevention

Toolbox Talk:

Lead-Safe Work Practices and Engineering Controls

June 27, 2025

Controlling how lead spreads on-site is just as important as wearing PPE.

Why It Matters:

Improper work methods—like dry sanding or torch cutting—can send lead dust everywhere. Once airborne, lead becomes a hazard not only for the worker but for everyone nearby.

Key Points:

  • Use wet methods to reduce dust when sanding, scraping, or cutting.
  • HEPA-filtered vacuums should be used for cleanup—never dry sweep.
  • Enclose work areas using plastic sheeting or temporary barriers to contain dust.
  • Provide proper ventilation with exhaust fans that vent outside the work zone.
  • Label work zones clearly to keep non-essential personnel out.

✅ Good controls keep the hazard contained.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we using wet methods or HEPA tools today?
  • Is our work area fully enclosed and marked off?
