Lead Exposure Prevention

Toolbox Talk:

Lead Safe Work Practices in the Field

June 27, 2025

When lead-containing materials are disturbed, your work habits can protect — or poison — you and those around you.

Why It Matters:

Even small amounts of lead dust can cause serious health problems, especially with repeated exposure. Following safe work practices reduces the risk of contamination on the jobsite and beyond.

Key Points:

  • Wet methods (misting surfaces before cutting or scraping) help suppress airborne lead dust.
  • Use hand tools instead of power tools whenever possible to reduce dust generation.
  • Isolate the work area with plastic sheeting and warning signs to prevent the spread of lead particles.
  • Clean up with a HEPA vacuum and damp cloths — never dry sweep or use compressed air.
  • Dispose of all lead-contaminated debris in labeled, sealed containers according to local regulations.

✅ Smart habits now prevent long-term health risks later.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we using wet methods and containment when handling lead materials?
  • Do we have proper cleanup supplies and disposal plans ready?
