Scaffold Platform Safety

Toolbox Talk:

Maintain Proper Guardrails and Toe Boards

June 25, 2025

Scaffold platforms must have complete edge protection — no exceptions.

Why It Matters:

Falls from scaffolds are among the most common—and deadly—construction accidents. Guardrails and toe boards are your first line of defense, preventing both people and tools from falling off elevated work areas.

Key Points:

  • Guardrails must include a top rail (38–45 inches), mid-rail, and toe board on all open sides.
  • If any component is missing or damaged, the scaffold is not safe to use.
  • Toe boards prevent tools and materials from sliding off and injuring workers below.
  • Check for secure attachment and damage at the start of each shift.
  • Never remove rails or boards for easier access — use proper entry points or adjust the platform correctly.

✅ No guardrail? No go.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are all guardrails and toe boards in place?
  • Who is responsible for checking platform edge protection today?
