Overhead Power Line Clearance

Toolbox Talk:

Maintain Safe Distance from Power Lines

June 22, 2025

Contact with overhead power lines is a leading cause of crane and equipment fatalities. Electricity can arc — you don’t even have to touch the line to be in danger.

Why It Matters:

Even close proximity to a power line can result in electrocution. Distance is your best protection.

Key Points:

  • OSHA requires a minimum 10-foot clearance from lines up to 50kV. More distance is needed for higher voltages.
  • Always identify power line voltage before work begins.
  • Use a spotter when operating near lines.
  • De-energize and ground lines when possible.

✅ Distance saves lives — know the limits.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we know the voltage of nearby lines?
  • Are we keeping the required distance?
