Equipment Blind Spots & Exclusion Zones

Toolbox Talk:

Never Assume the Operator Sees You

June 26, 2025

Heavy equipment operators have limited visibility — large blind spots exist to the front, rear, and sides of most machines. Assuming you’re visible can lead to serious injury or death.

Why It Matters:

Struck-by incidents often happen when workers enter blind spots or walk behind equipment without being seen. Operators are focused on their task and may not realize someone is nearby.

Key Points:

  • Always make eye contact with the operator before approaching equipment.
  • Wait for a clear signal or wave before entering the equipment’s working area.
  • Wear high-visibility clothing at all times.
  • Never walk behind or beside running equipment unless necessary and safe.
  • Use designated walkways and stay out of exclusion zones whenever possible.

✅ If you can’t see the operator’s eyes, they can’t see you.

Ask the Crew:

  • Have we reviewed today’s equipment movement areas?
  • Do we make eye contact before approaching operating machinery?
