Safe Handling of Chemicals

Toolbox Talk:

Never Mix Chemicals Without Approval

June 27, 2025

Mixing chemicals without proper guidance can result in dangerous reactions, including toxic gas releases, fires, or explosions. Even everyday products can become hazardous when combined.

Why It Matters:

Many workers assume that if chemicals are safe on their own, they’re safe together. But some mixtures—like bleach and ammonia—can create poisonous gases. Understanding chemical compatibility prevents serious incidents.

Key Points:

  • Always read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before using or storing any chemical.
  • Do not mix any chemicals unless the manufacturer or safety lead has explicitly approved the combination.
  • Watch for cross-contamination, especially when using shared tools or containers.
  • Use separate, labeled containers for each product.
  • Never pour unused chemicals back into their original container—you may contaminate the whole batch.
  • If a reaction starts (fizzing, odor, smoke), evacuate immediately and report it.

✅ Just because it’s liquid doesn’t mean it’s safe to combine.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we using more than one chemical today?
  • Have we checked if they’re compatible?
  • Do we know who to ask if we’re unsure?
