Toolbox Talk:

OSHA Rules for Asbestos on Construction Sites

June 27, 2025

OSHA has strict rules in place for working around asbestos — and for good reason. These regulations are designed to prevent exposure, ensure proper handling of materials, and protect workers from long-term illness. Even minor violations of these standards can result in serious health consequences and steep penalties for employers.

Why It Matters:

Construction workers are one of the most at-risk groups for asbestos exposure. Knowing OSHA’s rules helps prevent accidental disturbance of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) and ensures proper protective steps are taken before work begins.

Key Points:

  • OSHA Standard 1926.1101 governs asbestos work in construction.
  • Workers must not disturb suspected ACMs unless they’re trained and certified for asbestos work.
  • Before demolition or renovation, a competent person must inspect the site for ACMs.
  • If ACMs are found, the area must be labeled, contained, and only handled by trained personnel using approved PPE.
  • Air monitoring and decontamination procedures are required for certain levels of exposure.
  • Employers must provide asbestos awareness training to all employees who may encounter ACMs.

✅ OSHA rules aren’t optional — they’re there to save lives and prevent irreversible damage.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we know what to do if we encounter suspected asbestos-containing materials?
  • Who is our competent person for asbestos identification and handling?
