Toolbox Talk:

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Asbestos Work

June 27, 2025

Working around asbestos requires more than just caution — it demands the right protective gear.

Why It Matters:

Asbestos fibers can cling to clothing, enter the lungs, and spread to others. Proper PPE creates a barrier between you and a serious long-term health hazard.

Key Points:

  • Wear disposable coveralls rated for asbestos work — do not reuse them.
  • Use a tight-fitting, NIOSH-approved respirator (typically a P100 or half-face with HEPA filters).
  • Always wear gloves and rubber boots that can be decontaminated.
  • PPE must be donned and doffed in a designated area to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Never take contaminated clothing home — it puts your family at risk.
  • Follow decontamination procedures carefully after each exposure.

✅ The right PPE can save your lungs — and your life.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we have the correct PPE for potential asbestos exposure?
  • What’s our process for safely removing and disposing of PPE after use?
