Safe entry and exit should be built into your job plan — not an afterthought.
Why It Matters:
Trenches are high-risk areas. Without a plan for how to get in and out safely, workers often default to risky behavior like jumping down or climbing out. Emergency exits must be thought through before work begins — not during a crisis.
Key Points:
- Identify and mark access/egress points during your pre-task planning (PTP).
- Ensure ladders, ramps, or stairs are on-site and installed before anyone enters the trench.
- Review escape procedures as part of your daily huddle. Everyone should know how to exit fast.
- Don’t allow work to begin if safe access isn’t already in place.
- Make sure all equipment operators and nearby trades are aware of access zones.
✅ Start with safety — because you don’t get to add it later.
Ask the Crew:
- Did we plan and communicate how to enter and exit today’s trench?
- Is access in place before we begin?
- Can everyone explain how they would exit if something went wrong?
