Spoil Pile Placement

Toolbox Talk:

Plan Spoil Placement in Advance

June 22, 2025

Spoil shouldn’t be dumped “wherever there’s room.” Safe placement starts with smart planning.

Why It Matters:

Improper spoil placement leads to blocked exits, unstable piles, and trench collapses. Planning ahead helps keep the site efficient, compliant, and safe for everyone.

Key Points:

  • Identify spoil zones during pre-task planning — not during the dig.
  • Assign a spotter or lead to monitor spoil pile locations throughout the shift.
  • Watch for changes in wind, slope, or ground stability that may require adjustments.
  • Keep spoil at least 2 feet from the trench and out of access paths.

Safe sites don’t just happen — they’re planned.

Ask the Crew:

  • Did we plan our spoil zones before starting?
  • Is anyone actively watching and adjusting pile placement?
