Safe Handling of Chemicals

Toolbox Talk:

Proper Storage of Hazardous Chemicals

June 27, 2025

Safe storage of chemicals is a critical part of preventing spills, reactions, and exposures on the jobsite. Where and how you store chemicals can directly affect worker health and environmental safety.

Why It Matters:

Improper storage—such as placing incompatible chemicals together or failing to secure containers—can lead to fires, explosions, or harmful fumes. OSHA and EPA regulations require specific handling and labeling to reduce these risks.

Key Points:

  • Store chemicals by compatibility, not alphabetically. Acids, bases, and flammables should be separated.
  • Use ventilated, fire-resistant cabinets for flammable or volatile substances.
  • Ensure all containers are sealed, upright, and labeled clearly with the product name and hazard class.
  • Keep storage areas dry and away from high-traffic zones or ignition sources.
  • Use secondary containment (e.g., trays or tubs) to catch leaks or spills.
  • Post warning signs and keep SDSs accessible near storage areas.

✅ Safe storage is the first defense against chemical accidents.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are all our chemical containers properly labeled and sealed?
  • Are incompatible chemicals stored apart?
  • Do we have the right containment setup in place?
