Toolbox Talk:

Read and Understand Hazard Statements

June 27, 2025

Every chemical label includes hazard statements — these aren’t just formalities, they describe real dangers you must prepare for.

Why It Matters:

Hazard statements help you understand what could happen if the chemical is misused. This includes risks like skin burns, respiratory damage, cancer, or even death. Ignoring them puts you and your team in danger.

Key Points:

  • Hazard statements are standardized by OSHA’s GHS system and appear on every chemical label.
  • Examples include: “Causes severe skin burns and eye damage,” or “May cause cancer.”
  • Signal words like “Warning” (less severe) or “Danger” (more severe) are also included.
  • Use hazard statements to guide your PPE choices, ventilation needs, and emergency plans.
  • Multiple chemicals may have overlapping risks — check them all.

✅ Understand the hazard before handling the material.

Ask the Crew:

  • What hazard statements are on the chemicals we’re using today?
  • Do we need to adjust our PPE or ventilation based on those risks?
