Toolbox Talk:

Recognizing and Avoiding Equipment Swing Radius Hazards

June 26, 2025

Many types of heavy equipment — such as excavators, cranes, and backhoes — have a rotating or swinging upper structure. The swing radius is a danger zone that can trap or crush anyone in its path.

Why It Matters:

The counterweight and boom can move silently and quickly. Workers standing too close may be caught off guard and seriously injured. Failing to respect swing zones is a common cause of struck-by incidents on construction sites.

Key Points:

  • Know the swing radius of every piece of rotating equipment on site.
  • Use barricades, cones, or painted lines to define the swing area.
  • Never enter the swing zone unless absolutely necessary — and only with the operator’s knowledge.
  • Operators must use mirrors, cameras, and spotters to monitor blind areas.
  • Crews should review swing hazards during pre-task briefings.

✅ Awareness of the swing radius keeps you out of harm’s way.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are all swing zones marked and understood by the team?
  • Have we reviewed today’s operations for rotating equipment hazards?
