Toolbox Talk:

Recognizing Cardiac Arrest and Starting CPR

June 27, 2025

Every second counts when someone’s heart stops. Recognizing the signs of cardiac arrest and beginning CPR immediately can mean the difference between life and death — especially on a jobsite where EMS may be minutes away.

Why It Matters:

According to OSHA and the American Heart Association, immediate CPR can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. In high-risk environments like construction, preparedness is key.

Key Points:

  • Cardiac arrest signs: sudden collapse, no pulse, no breathing, unresponsiveness.
  • Call for help immediately — alert 911 and notify site supervision.
  • Start chest compressions: place hands in the center of the chest and press hard and fast (about 100–120 compressions per minute).
  • Do not stop CPR unless the person revives, trained help arrives, or you are physically unable to continue.

✅ You don’t have to be a medic to save a life — just act fast and push hard.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we all know how to recognize cardiac arrest?
  • Has anyone here been CPR certified?
  • Do we know who to call first on site in an emergency?
