Lead Exposure Prevention

Toolbox Talk:

Recognizing Common Sources of Lead on Construction Sites

June 27, 2025

Lead isn’t just a hazard in old homes — it can show up on many jobsites without warning.

Why It Matters:

Lead exposure can cause serious health effects over time, including kidney damage, nervous system problems, and reproductive issues. It enters the body through inhalation or ingestion — often without any obvious symptoms.

Key Points:

  • Lead is often found in old paint, pipes, solder, roofing materials, and some industrial coatings.
  • Sanding, grinding, torching, or demolishing painted surfaces may release lead dust.
  • Workers in renovation, demolition, and steel structure jobs are at the highest risk.
  • Don’t assume materials are safe — get them tested if they may contain lead.

✅ Identifying lead hazards early prevents exposure and keeps the crew healthy.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we know which materials on site may contain lead?
  • Have any recent jobs or tasks created dust we didn’t test for?
