Underground Utility Detection

Toolbox Talk:

Respect Utility Markings

June 22, 2025

Once utilities are marked, don’t disturb them. They show exactly where not to dig.

Why It Matters:

Accidentally moving or removing markers puts everyone at risk — one misstep could hit a live utility.

Key Points:

  • Never drive over, dig out, or cover markers.
  • Use flags, cones, or barriers to keep the area protected.
  • Request re-marking if paint fades or ground conditions shift.
  • Treat utility markings as off-limits zones for excavation.

Utility Marking Color Code:

  • Red – Electric power lines
  • Yellow – Gas, oil, steam
  • Orange – Communications (phone, cable, internet)
  • Blue – Potable water
  • Green – Sewer and drain lines
  • Purple – Reclaimed water
  • White – Proposed excavation area
  • Pink – Temporary survey markings

✅ Markings protect more than just pipes — they protect lives.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are utility markers still visible and undisturbed?
  • Has anything changed that requires re-marking?
  • Are we maintaining clear zones around all marked lines?
