Toolbox Talk:

Responding to Sprains, Strains, and Soft Tissue Injuries

June 27, 2025

Twisting an ankle, pulling a muscle, or overextending a joint can happen fast — especially during lifting, climbing, or rushing through tasks. Knowing how to respond properly can reduce downtime and prevent permanent damage.

Why It Matters:

Soft tissue injuries may seem minor at first but can become long-term problems if not treated. Immediate and correct action helps manage pain, swelling, and healing — and keeps your crew working safely.

Key Points:

  • Follow the R.I.C.E. method: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.
  • Stop working immediately to prevent worsening the injury.
  • Ice the area for 15–20 minutes every hour for the first day.
  • Use a compression wrap if available, and keep the injured area elevated when possible.
  • Report all injuries, no matter how small they seem — this protects both the worker and the jobsite.

✅ Early action prevents minor strains from becoming major setbacks.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do you know the signs of a sprain or strain?
  • Are we taking breaks and lifting correctly to prevent these injuries?
  • Do you know who to report a minor injury to — and why it matters?
