Toolbox Talk:

Rules for Working Around Suspected Asbestos

June 27, 2025

When asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are suspected but not confirmed, caution must guide every step.

Why It Matters:

Asbestos fibers are microscopic and deadly when inhaled. Even minimal disturbance of suspect materials can release them into the air. Following strict rules protects your health and your crew.

Key Points:

  • Never disturb suspect materials unless they’ve been tested and cleared.
  • Assume unknown materials are hazardous until proven otherwise.
  • Use wet methods to control dust—dry cutting or grinding is never safe.
  • Post warning signs and restrict access around suspect areas.
  • Notify your supervisor or safety lead immediately if you encounter possible ACMs.
  • Only trained and certified personnel should handle or remove asbestos.

✅ Respect the unknown. It’s not worth the risk.

Ask the Crew:

  • Have we identified and marked all suspect materials?
  • What should we do if we accidentally disturb something that might contain asbestos?
