Safety Data Sheets (SDS) Management

Toolbox Talk:

SDS Access Must Be Immediate and Unrestricted

June 27, 2025

Workers must be able to access Safety Data Sheets anytime, without asking permission.

Why It Matters:

In an emergency, time is critical. OSHA requires that SDSs be readily available to all workers at all times — not locked in an office, a trailer, or behind a login screen. Delays in accessing hazard or first aid information can lead to serious harm.

Key Points:

  • Store SDSs in a clearly marked binder or provide digital access (e.g., FieldScout).
  • Post SDS locations at jobsite entrances and break areas.
  • Train new workers on how and where to access SDSs.
  • Never restrict access — workers shouldn’t need to ask a supervisor or foreman to see one.

✅ If it’s not accessible, it’s not compliant.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do you know where our SDSs are stored?
  • Could you access one right now without help?
