Even a perfect ladder can fail if it shifts during use. Both the base and the top must be secure.
Why It Matters:
A ladder that slips at the base or top can cause a serious fall. Most ladder incidents happen not from breaking, but from movement — especially on slick surfaces or uneven terrain.
Key Points:
- Place the base on level, slip-resistant ground — avoid gravel, loose soil, or slick concrete.
- Use ladder feet with slip-resistant pads, and never place a ladder on unstable objects to gain height.
- At the top, secure the ladder to a fixed point using straps, hooks, or tie-offs if possible — especially for extension ladders.
- Keep the ladder’s base free of debris or traffic. Place cones or warnings around it if necessary.
- Avoid placing ladders near doorways or walkways unless those areas are blocked off or controlled.
✅ A ladder that shifts is a ladder that fails.
Ask the Crew:
- Is our ladder secured at both the base and the top?
- Do we need help stabilizing it before climbing?
