A ladder’s safety starts at the ground — literally. If the base isn’t stable, everything above it is a risk.
Why It Matters:
Many ladder-related injuries happen when the base slips, shifts, or sinks into soft surfaces. Even a small wobble at the bottom can lead to a dangerous fall from the top.
Key Points:
- Place ladders only on level, solid surfaces. Avoid gravel, mud, or uneven ground.
- Use ladder levelers, anti-slip feet, or base plates if working on a slope or unstable surface.
- Never place a ladder on loose objects to gain extra height — like bricks, plywood, or blocks.
- Ensure the bottom of the ladder is clean and dry to prevent slipping.
- Secure the base with a second person holding it when necessary, especially during setup or windy conditions.
✅ A firm base is the foundation of ladder safety.
Ask the Crew:
- Are our ladders set on firm, even surfaces?
- Do we need extra support or stabilization at the base?
