Traffic Control and Work Zone Safety

Toolbox Talk:

Set Up Work Zones with Safety in Mind

June 26, 2025

Creating a safe work zone isn’t just about cones and signs — it’s about controlling the flow of traffic and protecting every worker in the path of moving vehicles.

Why It Matters:

Poorly marked or disorganized work zones are a leading cause of struck-by incidents. Drivers, both civilian and construction-related, need clear guidance to avoid dangerous mistakes.

Key Points:

  • Use signs, cones, barriers, and flaggers to clearly mark work zones.
  • Position advance warning signs far enough ahead to give drivers time to slow down.
  • Place high-visibility signage where it won’t be obstructed by equipment or vehicles.
  • Never rely on cones alone to stop traffic — use physical barriers when needed.
  • Coordinate with traffic engineers for complex intersections or detours.
  • ✅ Clear work zones save lives.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are all work zone boundaries clearly marked?
  • Do we have proper signs and traffic controls in place today?
