Toolbox Talk:

Standardize and Practice Hand Signals

June 25, 2025

Clear, consistent hand signals are essential when guiding heavy equipment. Confusion between spotter and operator can lead to equipment damage or injuries.

Why It Matters:

When radios fail or noise levels are too high, hand signals are often the only reliable method of communication. Standardized signals ensure every operator and spotter is speaking the same “language.”

Key Points:

  • Use ANSI or OSHA-recognized standard hand signals.
  • Review and practice signals regularly with both spotters and operators.
  • Spotters must position themselves where they are clearly visible.
  • Use slow, deliberate motions — never rush or improvise a signal.
  • If a signal isn’t understood, stop the operation and clarify before continuing.

✅ Standard signals = fewer mistakes, safer moves.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we all know the standard hand signals for today’s operation?
  • Have we practiced them together recently?
