When radios fail or noise levels are too high, hand signals are often the only reliable method of communication. Standardized signals ensure every operator and spotter is speaking the same “language.”

• Use ANSI or OSHA-recognized standard hand signals.
• Review and practice signals regularly with both spotters and operators.
• Spotters must position themselves where they are clearly visible.
• Use slow, deliberate motions — never rush or improvise a signal.
• If a signal isn’t understood, stop the operation and clarify before continuing.
