Even with signs, cones, and barriers in place, vehicles can still enter your work zone unexpectedly. One distracted or impaired driver is all it takes.
Why It Matters:
Intrusions are one of the leading causes of worker fatalities in road construction. Most intrusions happen quickly and without warning — workers must stay situationally aware and know where to go if something goes wrong.
Key Points:
- Always face oncoming traffic when possible, especially if working near the edge of a lane.
- Designate a spotter or look-out when working within a few feet of active traffic lanes.
- Keep escape routes open and clear. Know where you would run if a vehicle enters the zone.
- Avoid distractions — stay off your phone and limit loud music near active traffic.
- Wear high-visibility apparel with reflective striping (Class 2 or 3 depending on speed limits).
- If you see a driver entering the work zone, sound an air horn or yell immediately to alert the crew.
✅ Awareness and planning can save your life — be ready before it happens.
Ask the Crew:
- What’s our escape route today if a car enters the zone?
- Who’s keeping eyes on traffic while we work?
