Toolbox Talk:

Stay in the Operator’s Line of Sight

June 25, 2025

A spotter is only effective if the operator can see them clearly at all times. Losing visual contact can turn a simple maneuver into a serious incident.

Why It Matters:

Heavy equipment has large blind spots. If a spotter steps outside the operator’s view, the operator may unknowingly move the equipment into a dangerous situation — putting people or property at risk.

Key Points:

  • Always maintain direct line of sight between operator and spotter.
  • If sight is lost, the operator must stop immediately.
  • Avoid standing behind equipment or in pivot zones.
  • Use high-visibility clothing to make yourself more noticeable.
  • Consider using a second spotter if the area is large or visibility is limited.

✅ If you can’t be seen, you can’t be safe.

Ask the Crew:

  • Can your operator see you at all times during spotting?
  • What’s our plan if line of sight is lost during a maneuver?
